As a big fan of the Sandman Slim novels from the beginning, I grabbed this new non-Sandman book by Kadrey the moment I heard of it. And while it is indeed fun, with all of the snappy dialogue and dirty angel characters you crave from Kadrey, it's clearly a lesser work. In fact, it feels almost like he wrote it over a short amount of time. It doesn't have quite the same level of polish and, dare I say, love that Kadrey shines on Sandman Slim and his gang. It's also similar in that there are angels, magic and anti-magic wielders, and the ultimate Star Wars Bar, in the form of a secret mall where magic creatures go to drink and shop. But it ends up feeling like a watered down Sandman Slim novel (in fact, I'm tempted to believe this started life as a Sandman Slim novel, but that Kadrey changed it later when he saw it wasn't going to reach quite the same level as those books).

So if you've got money to burn and are sitting on a beach somewhere desperate for a fun book: Do go ahead and grab this. But otherwise, wait for the paperback.

I really wanted to like this book. I like the "Sandman Slim" books by Richard Kadrey. But this series just didn't do it for me. Too many characters. Too man side plots. Too many similar characters that tend to blend together in my mind. Just a really disappointing lackluster read. Sigh.
I love Richard Kadrey, read his sandman slim books, butcher bird, metrophage; the story was good but the cultists killed the story for me, they were too goofy and it felt forced with those guys, the comedy aspect was hit and miss I look forward to the next book in the series anyway because this author is the real deal and want to give the benefit of the doubt
more humor than heist, even though there is plenty of heist. Populated with all manner of ghoul, goblin, vampire, angel, devil etc. and their ridiculous abilities, supplied as needed whenever someone needs to get out of a jam... so this is satire on all things zombie apocalypse - that would be LA tacky in particular - to the point where you don't care what happens to anybody. Which is fine as long as you weren't expecting something more emotionally engaging. The "trying to be funny" really does succeed, I cracked up at least once on every page.
I've been a big fan of Kadrey's writing for a few years now. After I read the first Sandman Slim novel, it actually took me a while to try another book from Kadrey because it was so different from what I was used to reading. After stepping back and adjusting my expectations, I was really able to enjoy his books. After the Sandman Slim books, I was able to check his other works like Metrophage and Butcher Bird. That's when I found out that I really like the Sandman Slim novels, but I really love his other stuff. The Everything Box falls squarely into the "other stuff," category. It gets to follow other rules than the Sandman Slim universe, and take a different tone. The characters are great, the story is unique, and it's a lighter mood than Sandman Slim.
Sorry The Everything Box was just a little too flippant, juvenile, and predictable for my taste. Never felt I was surprised by what happened, never guffawed while reading it. Raucous? Yes. Just in very predictable ways.
Coming into this book never hearing about Richard Kadrey, I really liked it. I liked all the side plots and how they all came together. Although sometimes I wanted the parts to switch to show another character's point of view, none of the parts (in my opinion) were really boring. I've always loved books with magic and mysterious creatures and The Everything Box never dissapointed me with the amount of creativity in this book. There were some parts in this book that actually made me laugh out loud and parts that took my breath away. I would definetely reccomend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and crazy plot twists and story. My only complaint it that the ending didn't really go into detail on what happened to the characters after the major conflict. The Everything Box A Novel (Another Coop Heist)
Sandman Slim is a great series and I had high hopes for another Richard Kadrey story, but this book fell so far short. It seemed like it was trying for the same kind of comedic feel as the classic Dortmunder books by Donald Westlake, but the lead character, Coop, came off as whiny and annoying more than Dortmunder's hard-luck case.

The plot was all over the place with conflicting groups all trying for the titular Box and that kind of mess can be really entertaining, but the writing was trying so hard to be whacky that they all felt boring.

Kadrey is a great writer, the Sandman Slim novels prove that, but this is definitely him on an off-day.
