I want to learn more about argumentation simply because I want to learn more about how one can influence and move others to action. This book has been interesting so far for a number of reasons. The first is personal and relevant only to a select population. I am a Penn State graduate and this book was written by a Penn State professor. Not just any professor, however. Pattee is the name on the Penn State Library system, so in a sense, the book has significance from a historic point of view. You learn early that there were at least two Professors Pattee and I am guessing that they were brothers, one of whom the library system is named after. They taught at the school before it was a university.
I am interested in trying to understand the principles and tactics, and strategies of creating persuasive arguments and I think the book does an adequate job in this. After a while, however, you can get bogged down in the minutia of the subject, which tends to cause a guy like me to lose interest. I have to step aside from time to time; to set the text down and go onto to something else, or the detail will deadened my interest.
For the price, however, I can sincerely recommend this book. It may not be new, but principles that it explains do not change with time. People are people and the patterns of forming persuasive arguments are still the same.
