Exactly what I was looking for in an Olivia Goldsmith book - drama and revenge of the ladies:) Don't expect high literature, expect a fun ride. It's a fluffy, easy read. Perhaps the protagonist, Mary Jane (aka Jahne Moore) moped and whined a bit too much for my taste - an obvious device for Goldsmith to get her message of the double standard applicable to women across -- but overall she came through strong and likeable. Goldsmith always delivers with the bad guys getting their comeuppance and the good guys succeeding and finding happiness, even if they hadn't anticipated what that happiness would ultimately look like.Tags : Flavor of the Month [Olivia Goldsmith] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Good book, lots of characters to keep track of so you have to think a little -I liked that. The characters were well developed, and the ending was surprising. Not very realistic, but a good read, nonetheless.
For lovers of _The Bestseller_, you will also love _Flavor of the Month_. A delightfully witty, clever, creative romp through the lives of three women who stumble into great luck in Hollywood, and all the people who try to make money off them. I read this book on vacation after reading _Valley of the Dolls_, and I must say that I much preferred it. In fact, I could barely put it down. I have since sent it to all of my friends in the entertainment business. Even though it is about 10 years' old, it still feels very current (with the exception of one plot twist which is far less shocking these days than it was even 10 years ago). A great book.
It is perfect for the beach, even if it is the winter and there is no beach. I could not put it down. As a matter of fact, I am about to reach into the Olivia Goldsmith bag of books and pull out another.
I have only one word for this book "Boring". Sorry I just can't recommend any books by this author as I find all her story boring and all so similar.
This book starts out really, really slow, to the point I almost just stopped reading it but because I'm such an avid reader I continued knowing it could get better & it did! It has a lot of predictability but there are still some surprises, ended up being a good read.
If you think you're gettin a fun, glamorous, easy read, think again. I love all Hollywood related novels - I've read all of Jackie Collins books, and I've started reading Rebecca Chance, Tilly Bagshawe, Louis Bagshawe etc. and am very well versed with the genre. I thought this book had a really strong "negtive" vibe. The characters are hard to like and develop attachment to. The entire book is filled with whiny complaints and I personally thought the characters were extremely ungrateful for what they got. There was no happy moment when they "made" it. The eccentricities seemed forced and thrown in randomly - not believable and fun. Finally, there are so many repetitions in phrases. I read "she felt like she could sleep for a month" like 6 times. I really wanted to like this book, but unfortunately, I really disliked it and only read the whole thing because of my compulsive nature to never leave a book unfinished.
I first read this book in college, and I'd been watching for it to be released on so I could experience it again. The main character, Mary Jane, is every bit as compelling as I'd remembered. Her journey is quite touching and inspiring--you really want to see her happy.
The other two leads, Lila and Sharleen, have more dated stories, unfortunately; at times, it's a little harder to believe they could exist (I had less trouble with that when I was young, I guess). But Mary Jane has the lion's share of "screen time," so the book remains a really easy and entertaining read.
