The Demon Trapper Daughter A Demon Trappers Novel Jana Oliver Books

An interesting blend of demons and slight dystopia. This paranormal world takes place in a future Atlanta, Georgia, focusing on those struggling to work in a crumbling economy by trapping demons for the Church. The job is both taxing (there's plenty of action and gore) and mundane (demon buyers, trapper training, guild meetings). Riley, a high schooler, is still an apprentice trapper, hoping to follow in her father's footsteps and help bring some income to their simple life. But when the demons start working together and the grade 5 demons start showing up, things get complicated. She will have to get over her differences with her father's previous apprentice Denver Beck, accept a new tougher master, and learn to balance school, trapping and a new love life all while remaining strong through emotional loss and against the trampling of the other trappers wary of female involvement.

Jana Oliver created a complex world that is at once both incredibly relate-able and wondrously surprising. It's great to read a paranormal story that includes the mundane life surrounding the action, too (what heroine doesn't need to pee?!). The only downside of this is that it can be a little dry at times, but the sporadic action (which exponentially increases by the time the action-packed climax hits) and the mystery & intrigue did an excellent job of drawing me in. Although the book seems to jump right this world with little introduction, the author does a great job of explaining-without-explaining the different rules and demons and typical lifestyles during the story. Her character development also builds well throughout; very complex characters.

I highly recommend this book if you like demons, women fighting for a role in a "man's job" (Go, girl!), and a hint of realistic near-future dystopia.

The Demon Trapper Daughter A Demon Trappers Novel Jana Oliver Books Reviews

This book was pretty darn awesome and it kept me hooked from beginning to end. It has a pretty original feel to it and that of course made me like it more. Also, it isn't a paranormal book that is romantically driven. Sure there is romance, but the main focus of the story is more to do with the demons and the trouble they cause.

Our heroine Riley is a very strong one. She is tough and determined and can hold her own. However, she is also very stubborn. She is possibly the most stubborn character I have ever encountered in all my reading adventures to date. She is the kind of character that just does not know when to ask for help and that is ALWAYS a trait that makes me crazy. She is also very argumentative. Because of this, there were a lot of moments where I wanted to punch her. However, in the end I do admire her as a character and I like that she isn't a damsel in distress.

The novel presents us with two guys. A love triangle, yes, but this is a good one and it didn't really aggravate me. First we have Simon. Simon is a good boy who plays by the rules. He is incredibly sweet and adorable and good hearted. So naturally, I don't trust him. Then we have Beck. Beck is cranky and overbearing and a general pain in the ass. Naturally, I adore him and want to huggle him.

Like I said though, The Demon Trapper's Daughter is not romantically driven. The story is about Riley learning to cope and survive in the face of a devastating tragedy. It is about her growing up and dealing with things you may not want to deal with. Of course this is all done with demons getting in the way.

I really loved the way this book was written. It is written in the third person and I love books like that. I love getting in different characters heads and seeing the story outside of one characters bubble. I especially loved seeing from Beck's perspective. It really enabled the reader to understand him. Had we only seen him from Riley's POV, the reader would think he is a jerk plain and simple and not someone who has Riley's best interests at heart.

All in all, The Demon Trapper's Daughter is a very engaging read. There is action from beginning to end and that keep you hooked to the pages. I cannot wait to start the next chapter of this story.
